An industry-leading biotechnology company has successfully achieved its demanding life specifications with New Scale Technologies’ M3-RS-U2-4.5-360 Rotary Smart Stage for embedded motion in a photonics instrument.

The lead optomechanical engineer for the project reports that the M3-RS-U2 Rotary Stage without a load has surpassed 65 years of use case, or 7M moves, without any degradation of the performance or issues with communication and has surpassed 30 years of use case with a load. “This is an amazing performance,” stated the engineer.

This independent life testing has surpassed New Scale’s published specification for the number of random positions by 3.5x.

“When delivering a complete mechatronics solution, product reliability is extremely important,” said David Henderson, CEO at New Scale. “Expected operational life is an important consideration as design engineers search for ways to scale their large benchtop photonics instruments down from a breadboard to a commercial product. “

OEM design engineers who need to embed micro-motion into their photonics instruments have many components to consider, including the motor, driver, controller, position sensors, and guide mechanisms. New Scale’s M3 micro-mechatronic modules are complete motion systems with all of those components pre-integrated and pre-engineered, already optimized for minimum size, weight, power, and maximum operational lifetime.

“This is another great example of our motion systems exceeding the performance requirements in a demanding use case, within a critical component in the application,” Henderson said.

The M3-RS-U2 Rotary Stage was redesigned and introduced in 2022 as a lower-cost alternative to its predecessor, now optimized for high-volume production. This rotary stage provides better than 0.022 degrees closed-loop resolution and bandwidth of ~100 Hz, making it ideal for high-precision point-to-point positioning applications. Requiring only 3.3 VDC input and the ability to hold position with no power, it is optimal for integration into handheld, portable, and battery-powered instruments.
